Discrimination based on age continues to shape the Portuguese labour market, particularly affecting workers in more advanced stages of their working lives. Between stereotypes, barriers to career progression, and difficulties in accessing training, ageism remains a reality that is often silent but structural.
In an article published in RH Magazine, Camila Marques de Queiroz, Associate in the Labour practice at CCA Law Firm, analyses this phenomenon in light of current demographic and technological transformations, highlighting the need for more inclusive human resources policies and for a critical reflection on the existing legal framework.
“Valuing older workers is not only a matter of social justice, but also a strategic choice for companies,” she emphasises, reinforcing that in a context of active ageing and longer working lives, investing in continuous training and reviewing rules based exclusively on age criteria is essential to promote equality and combat institutionalised ageism.
