Filipe Mayer analyses the challenges of law firms acquiring legal tech companies

News

Are Portuguese law firms prepared to invest directly in legal techs and keep pace with the digital transformation of the legal sector?

In an article published by Jornal de Negócios, Filipe Mayer, Partner at CCA Law Firm, examines the impact and feasibility of acquiring technology startups by national firms. While this practice is growing internationally, the situation in Portugal is different due to the high costs involved and the specific characteristics of the market. Filipe emphasises that, despite the strategic benefits, this decision carries significant risks in a period of rapid technological evolution.

“The acquisition of legal tech companies by a law firm is a step that requires a substantial financial commitment, beyond the reach of the vast majority of Portuguese law firms,” explains the lawyer. Nevertheless, he highlights that such an investment can grant exclusivity in the use of certain solutions, providing a significant competitive advantage in the legal services market.

Given this reality, solutions such as technology licensing or strategic partnerships between firms emerge as alternative and more sustainable paths. As artificial intelligence becomes an essential tool in the sector, the greatest risk may be, as Filipe Mayer notes, “resisting change.”
