Marta Duarte talks about justice from a distance

The pandemic has had a huge impact on justice, causing the courts to paralyze, the postponement of proceedings and the delay of many cases. However, COVID-19 also came to demonstrate that it is possible to do things differently and, even so, to make justice work through the use of remote communication platforms to carry out steps such as trials and preliminary hearings. In an opinion piece for ECO-Advocatus, Marta Duarte, CCA's Partner of the Litigation and Arbitration Department, discusses the possibility of applying technology to justice, allowing greater speed in legal proceedings.

"It would be a huge leap forward for justice if, through technology, citizens could perceive how long, on average, a judicial process would last, given the type of action, the case, the number of parties involved and the number of witnesses. In in addition to helping the transparency of justice, it could lead to greater consideration in resorting to the courts", underlines CCA’s Partner, adding that "justice will always have to be applied by people to people, but technology can, without a doubt, help speed up, reduce costs and bring justice closer to citizens".
