The need for ambitious structural reform of Portuguese labor law has once again become a central topic of debate with the new government's announced revision of the Labor Code. Although Portugal is experiencing a period of economic growth, its labor system remains rigid and ill-suited to the digital age and the challenges of a highly competitive global market.
In an article for Expresso, Pedro Antunes, Partner in the Labour practice at CCA Law Firm, argues that it is time to “restart the Portuguese labor system” and proposes concrete measures to modernize legislation and organizational culture, with a focus on agility, transparency, and shared responsibility.
“It is time to restart the Portuguese labor system with ambition, shared responsibility, and commitment from all stakeholders. A competitive, modern, and people-centered system cannot be built with patches, but with vision and courage to change,” he says.
