Rita Cruz explains what it is like to be a lawyer versus a university professor

News

In an interview with ECO-Advocatus, Rita Cruz, partner at CCA Law Firm, shares her experience and explains how she divides her professional life between the firm and the Portuguese Catholic University, where since 1996 she has been an assistant in the courses of Civil Procedure of the Law degree. At the same time, she is also a professor in the postgraduate course in Legal Sciences and in the forensic master's degree, both taught at the Portuguese Catholic University.

"Teaching requires us to be constantly updated on the subjects, to be aware of the new views of law, of what is written, of what is decided in the courts. This permanent study allows us to have a more global vision, in addition to the case (s) that we have to deal with on a daily basis in the office and, above all, it allows us to resolve them much more easily and to find new solutions. For this reason, I think that the two activities are complementary and make us better and more complete professionals”, underlines the partner.

Regarding the main message that she tries to convey to her students about what the law is, Rita Cruz says: "I am always concerned with balancing a message of reality - making them see the imperfection of the functioning of our justice, of our courts and even of the law, but without failing to feed them some idealism, the dream of doing justice, with a capital 'J', defending the causes in which they believe, that the Law exists exactly to enforce this justice. It is not always easy to keep this balance, but I think it is fundamental for a law student to leave university with the conviction that he/she can make a difference, whether in the courts, in society or in the world".
