Signing documents remotely has become a procedure also accessible to foreign citizens, through the Mobile Digital Key (CMD).
The CMD, besides allowing its user to sign documents digitally (remotely), is also a simple and secure form of authentication that allows to access the official websites of Portuguese public services and entities.
This instrument, that was until some time ago only available to Portuguese citizens, was extended to foreign citizens who have a passport or residence permit.
The CMD can be requested at any branch of the Citizen's Bureau network (in Portugal). For foreign citizens living outside Portugal, it is possible to request the CMD at the Portuguese consular posts. If the request is made with the Passport, it is only available in some Portuguese consular posts.
To activate the CMD it is necessary to associate a mobile phone number and a Portuguese NIF. If you need to request a Portuguese NIF please contact us here.
Extending the use of this tool to foreign citizens represents one more step in the digitalisation and simplification of procedures, avoiding in-person displacements to sign documents and obtain information and/or documents from Portuguese services and public entities.
The following services can now be performed from any location:
- Access the homebanking service;
- Request a birth, marriage or death certificate;
- Consult the tax return and obtain proof of income tax;
- Sign digital documents with the same validity as a handwritten signature recognized by a lawyer or notary;
- Obtain certificates of non-debt;
- Renew the Citizen's Card;
- Revalidate the Driver's License;
- Schedule doctor's appointments;
- Among others.
