José specializes in Insurance Law and in judicial and arbitral litigation, including proceedings before the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. He has 30 years of experience providing legal counsel to national and international insurers, across both Life and Non-Life branches, advising in contentious matters as well as supporting claims managers in pre-litigation stages. He also assists foreign insurers operating under the Freedom to Provide Services regime in localizing their products to the Portuguese legal framework, reviewing policies across all business lines.
José advises on compliance, market conduct, and distribution matters, and has represented some of the world’s largest insurers in major D&O claims linked to high-profile cases involving financial institutions and public companies.
He is widely recognized, both nationally and internationally, for his technical expertise and strategic ability to act in complex and cross-border contexts. His practice extends across multiple jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Angola, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, giving him a strong multijurisdictional perspective and a deep understanding of the local and international dimensions of the insurance sector.

José joined CCA in 2024 as a Partner, where he established and now leads the Insurance and Reinsurance practice.
He began his legal career in 1995 and has since developed extensive expertise in the insurance sector, having worked at several leading Portuguese law firms. Over the years, José has been part of specialised teams focused on Insurance Law and Litigation. For nearly two decades, he was a Partner at a prominent national law firm, where he headed the insurance department until he joined CCA.
