Alcina de Oliveira Alves talks about the portuguese online gambling market

News

The latest figures of the portuguese online gaming and betting market, related to the Q3 2023, were released by the Portuguese gaming regulator (SRIJ) at the start of 2024 and showed an increase of 36% in the gross revenue for licensed operators, when in comparison to the same period in 2022. The modest population and the infancy of the market, when compared to more established ones, can explain its upward trajectory. However, Alcina de Oliveira Alves, Managing Associate of CCA's Online Gaming practice area, speaking to EGR magazine, explains there's still room to grow and work to be done.

"What seems to be lacking in the Portuguese jurisdiction is enough legal grounds to grant operators more powers and/or freedom to impose said exclusion and keep it in place for as long as necessary to fight or prevent addiction", underlines the Managing Associate.
