Domingos Cruz comments on the lack of liquidity in Portugal’s startup ecosystem

The lack of exit opportunities remains one of the main obstacles to the sustainable development of Portugal’s startup ecosystem. Despite the country’s talent, innovation, and access to capital, it continues to fall short in creating mechanisms that encourage divestment, a crucial step in the natural investment cycle.

In an article published in Expresso, Domingos Cruz, Managing Partner at CCA Law Firm, analyses the key structural barriers to the sector’s maturity and highlights the urgent need for measures that can consolidate the market and create real conditions for capital rotation. “The number of divestments has been below desirable levels (...) I am confident that it will increase in 2026 and in the years to follow, due to a range of factors,” the lawyer states.

This reflection reinforces the importance of building a more dynamic and predictable market, capable of supporting the ambitions of Portuguese startups and consistently attracting both domestic and international investors.
