The increase in the tax burden on sectors such as fuels and tobacco continues to expose weaknesses in the tax system and to create incentives for the growth of smuggling and tax fraud.
In an article published in Jornal de Negócios, Filipe Gomes da Silva, Senior Associate in the Tax practice at CCA, analyses this phenomenon and argues that the State’s response must be structural, combining balanced tax policies with effective mechanisms to control and repress illegal activity.
“Contrary to what one might think, the solution cannot lie solely in reducing taxes, but rather in strengthening enforcement, cooperation between European tax authorities, and the speed of tax justice,” explains the lawyer.
